Bad Boy, Oscar! Take a Time-Out!

I just thought I'd open the floor to bash Oscar on his narrow-minded and confounding nominee choices this year. I'll start with the easy one: no Best Picture for Walk the Line?! Oscar is such an asshole. I'll leave the other egregious mistakes (A History of Violence, please?) to you two. Also: is Crash as overrated as it seems to be? I don't want to make that claim with nothing to back it up, but the mere presence of Sandra Bullock would indicate that it sucks. So what'd you think of the noms? And have you made your picks yet?

I made my picks on my lunch break, not for what I want to win but what will inevitably win. Brokeback is the clear forerunner in the BP/BD categories, and my money's on Phil, Felicity, Rachel and Paul (retrograde) for acting. Oscar is LAME. Crash was good (I saw it on a plane), but a BP nod is taking it too far. They're trying to extend an olive branch to the issue of racism.

Well, you all know what I think already, so it's hardly worth mentioning. I was just perusing the NY Times Oscar section, and it's interesting to note that David Cronenberg was the #1 director choice for "should have been nominated" by all the critics. Also, Manohla Dargis gave a shout-out to Mathieu Amalric in Kings and Queen(even though his last name is spelled wrong as usual) and Christian Bale as best supporting actor in The New World, which I have yet to see. Shouldn't we all be USED to seeing our favorites not get nominated? OK I have to go look at the list again before I make my decisions as to who's actually going to win.

Here are my guesses:

Best Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who certainly has deserved it for a long time, but maybe not as much as Viggo Mortensen. Possible upset by Heath Ledger, who certainly deserves it, but only because of very recent activity.

Supporting Actor: George Clooney
Possible upset by William Hurt, people love the actors who have revived themselves from the land of chronic alcoholism. And I didn't think he was too hammy! If you were a big mob boss, you'd be hammy too.

Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon. Didn't see the movie, but that seems to be the trend.

Supporting Actress: Rachel Weisz. This category seems totally up in the air. Who gives a shit about supporting actresses really? Could be Michelle Williams too.

Animated Film: Wallace & Gromit

Directing: Steven Spielberg (should be), could be Ang Lee, he's good too. But it should really be DAVID CRONENBERG.

Best Pic: Brokeback Mountain, yay for gay people.

It's also worth mentioning that New York Magazine (no relation to the Times) named Viggo the Actor of the Year. He also graced the cover. I knew I liked that magazine...
